In the days when technical analysis first became really popular, the increasing speed of computer memory and processing gave the approach a great trading edge. Patterns of share price behaviour that had required a keen eye and manual updating could be quickly analysed and acted on.
As well as traditional bar charts, there were point and figure programmes, candlesticks, and all sorts of wave and cycle overlays, and nowadays anyone can flick on a yahoo/finance chart for free or their own broker software and pull up an immediate representation of all the popular indicators.
